Looking for the name of a book...?

I remember reading a book when I was young about a girl who is trying to get their farm house all cleaned up for a parade or something. She had him stand in buckets of bleach and also tried to hold one up to bleach his tail. It is along the Anne of Green Gables/Pippi Longstocking/Ramona type of book. Please help!
